The ITZA Chess home menu on a desktop browser
What you get. Seven ways in: online games, the Challengers, pass and play, a free analysis board, your whole game history, the lessons and the puzzles. Installed, it opens straight to this with no browser furniture around it.

Install

Put it on your home screen

ITZA Chess is a website that installs like an app. There is nothing to download from a store, nothing to approve, and nothing to update by hand - but you can still have an icon and a full screen.

The short version

Open Settings, then App, then Install

On Chrome and Edge that button raises the browser's own install prompt. On every other browser it shows you exactly which menu to open, because Safari, Firefox, Opera and Samsung each do it their own way. The instructions below are the same ones the app will give you.

iPhone & iPad

Safari only - iOS does not let other browsers install web apps.

  1. Open ITZA Chess in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button.
  3. Choose Add to Home Screen.
  4. Tap Add.

Android - Chrome or Edge

The only browsers that raise a prompt automatically.

  1. Open ITZA Chess.
  2. Tap Install when the prompt appears, or open Settings -> App -> Install.
  3. Confirm, and the icon appears with your other apps.

Android - Firefox

Installs from the browser menu by design.

  1. Open ITZA Chess in Firefox.
  2. Open the browser menu.
  3. Choose Add app to Home screen.

Android - Opera

Also a menu item rather than a prompt.

  1. Open ITZA Chess in Opera.
  2. Open the browser menu.
  3. Choose Home screen.

Android - Samsung Internet

  1. Open ITZA Chess in Samsung Internet.
  2. Open the menu.
  3. Choose Add page to, then Home screen.

Desktop

Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers.

  1. Open ITZA Chess.
  2. Click the install icon at the end of the address bar, or use Settings -> App -> Install.
  3. It opens in its own window from then on.

No install button? Only Chrome and Edge can raise one programmatically. Firefox, Opera and Safari install through their own menus, which is a decision those browsers made rather than something missing here. ITZA Chess also runs perfectly well as an ordinary tab - installing only removes the browser furniture and adds the icon.

Once it is installed

It keeps working when the signal does not

The app caches itself the first time you use it, so the board, the engine, the lessons and your saved games are all on the device. On a plane, on the underground, or on a hotel network that has given up, you can still play.

  • Works offline: games against the computer, learner mode, offline mode, pass & play, all thirteen lessons, the analysis board, and your local game history.
  • Needs the chain: online games, the lobby, in-game chat, rating updates and cross-device history sync.
  • Updates itself the next time you open it with a connection. There is no update to install.

What it needs

Connection
HTTPS, required for install
Browser
Any current browser
Account
Only for online play
Storage
A few megabytes
3D board
WebGL, loaded on first use
Third-party requests
None

The 3D library is served from the node rather than a content delivery network, so 2D players never download it.

Put it on your home screen.

No app store, no account required to start, and the board still opens when you are offline.
